EDITORIAL

'SCHOLARSHIP FROM THE BERTILL SWEDMARK FUND’
The Psammonalia executive committee has decided to give a scholarship (which supports the registration fee of the conference) to three meiobenthologists who fulfill the following criteria : younger than 35 years old, and presenting a paper or a poster in XIMCO. In order to make the selection we would like to receive the abstract of the presentation before 20 June 1998 (by email or fax). Please mention if you receive other financial support for travelling and accomodation'

10TH INTERNATIONAL MEIOFAUNA CONFERENCE (XIMCO)
TO BE HELD AT THE UNIVERSITY OF PLYMOUTH, U.K., 27TH TO 31ST JULY 1998

Plans for the conference are proceeding more or less according to plan and we, in Plymouth, are looking forward to welcoming you all in July, for what I hope will be an enjoyable and stimulating meeting.

Registration and accommodation.
So far we have had over 100 participant registrations and about 10 partner registrations and I know there are still some more to come. Although the deadline is past we are still accepting late registrations so if you are going to come please register as soon as possible. This will help us considerably the sooner we know how many to cater for in the arranged functions. There are still some accommodation places left at the University but these are running out, so, if you want to stay there you should get in quick. Registrations forms are printed in the February issue of Psammonalia, or can be obtained direct from Mike Gee (e-mail address jmge@wpo.nerc.ac.uk) or from our web site (http://inlet.geol.sc.edu/~nick/meiofauna.html).

Scientific programme.
We are in the final stages of putting the programme together. Themes 1-3 have been well supported and should provide some thought-provoking presentations and lively discussion. There are also some interesting offerings within themes 4 and 5.

Conference Dinner.
Due to operational problems we have had to change the venue for the conference dinner. However, I think we have managed to find somewhere equally exciting and authentic as our original venue at Buckand Abbey. The dinner will now be held in the grounds of Pencarrow House, the ancestral home of Lord and Lady St. Aubyn, descendents of one of Cornwall’s oldest families. The dinner will be preceded by a coach trip through the contryside of east Cornwall, and guided tours of the house in groups of about 20 people. The dinner itself will be in a marquee in the grounds - so please everyone, pray for fine weather.

Bertil Swedmark Fund Raffle.
In order to make this raffle go well, and raise lots of money for the fund, Paul Montagna has suggested that each group of participants from an orgainzation or institute donate, as a raffle prize, some item of memorabilia or merchandize from your institute - i.e. T-shirt, mug, cap, sweat-shirt, book, etc. - so that lots of people can go away with some loot and happy memories. Please try and bring something with you and hand it in at the registration desk. Many thanks.

Information packs.
During June, all registered participants, will be sent a pre-conference information pack. This will contain a preliminary conference programme and partners programme, accommodation and registration confirmation, maps of the city and University, travel information and instructions as to how to reach the conference centre and leaflets about Plymouth.

Enquiries.
Please direct all enquiries about registration and University accommodation to Mrs Horne (d.horne@plymouth.ac.uk) and on any other matters to XIMCO@plymouth.ac.uk

Interests : The colonization dynamics and biodiversity of meiobenthic organisms on artificial habitats. pollution effects on meiobenthos

I received my B.S. Degree from Istanbul university in 1991. I have started my graduate studies in 1993 at Louisiana State university on a scholarship provided by Turkish Ministery of Education. I received a Masters degree from Department of oceanography and Coastal Sciences at Louisiana State University. My master thesis topic was Bioremediation for Oil Spill Cleanup in Coastal Wetlands: Effects on meiobenthic community in laboratoty Mesocosms. Currently I have been working towards a Ph.D. degree at Louisiana State University, Department of Biological Sciences. My dissertation work is related to marine meiobenthic organisms of the Gulf of Mexico coast and their association with artificial hard substrates. I am also looking at the habitat complexity effects on the colonization of meiobenthic organisms on artificial and natural substrates.
